Understanding the development of type 2 diabetes

What is the issue?

In people with type 2 diabetes, a small protein called hIAPP can clump together in their pancreas. Scientists believe these clumps may damage the cells that produce insulin, which helps to control blood sugar levels.

What is being done to address it?

Researchers are studying tissue samples from donated pancreases to discover where these clumps form and how they affect the pancreas. They are also comparing tissue from people with diabetes to those without it, and will test blood samples from both groups.

How will this help future patients?

This could help scientists develop treatments to potentially prevent or manage type 2 diabetes more effectively.
